The nationwide alcohol ban has started today and lasts until 12pm Friday night. I fully understand that Thailand is strictly a Buddhist country and we’re now in the middle of one of the most important festivals (Buddhist Lent) and all Buddhists should celebrate it by visiting the temple and refraining from drinking alcohol.

What I completely fail to comprehend is why the alcohol ban is imposed on anyone and everyone regardless of their religious belief or lack of it - like myself. The government should appreciate that not everyone is a practising Buddhist and abstention from alcohol or anything branded morally wrong should be voluntary rather than compulsary.

If people feel like doing their good deeds, they will do them without having to be told. I know Thailand is not a prime example of a free democracy but stopping people having a drink or two when they’re gasping is simply out of line. And to make things worse, all bars and clubs are shut so everyone has to stay in with fuck all to do for two bleeding days.

While it’s bloody wicked to have two extra days off work this week, I’ve started to ask myself what’s the point when you can’t get drunk or even go out to pull a bird.

But as I’m not the only one stranded in this mess and there is bugger all I can do about it, I think it’s best to shut up and move on to do other things to help pass these two boring days. So I’m going to spend the next 36 hours or so on my PC cruising the web as well as watching some great TV programmes while I wait to get my hands back on the bottle
